And the Oscar should go to...

Oscar weekend is upon us, folks! As you know I've watched most of the films nominated this year - it's been a strong year in film and these awards are going to be tough to call, but here are my hopes and predictions...

BEST PICTURE

* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
* “Frost/Nixon”
* “Milk” (Focus Features)
* “The Reader” <-- would love for this to win as well
* “Slumdog Millionaire” <--strong chance of winning, but I think this film was overrated

BEST ACTOR

* Richard Jenkins in “The Visitor”
* Frank Langella in “Frost/Nixon”
* Sean Penn in “Milk” <-- I fear he might take it
* Brad Pitt in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
* Mickey Rourke in “The Wrestler” (SURPRISE!)

BEST ACTRESS

* Anne Hathaway in “Rachel Getting Married”
* Angelina Jolie in “Changeling”
* Melissa Leo in “Frozen River”
* Meryl Streep in “Doubt”
* Kate Winslet in “The Reader”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

* Josh Brolin in “Milk” <-- also deserving. Excellent performance.
* Robert Downey Jr. in “Tropic Thunder”
* Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Doubt”
* Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight” <--we all know he'll probably take it.
* Michael Shannon in “Revolutionary Road”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

* Amy Adams in “Doubt”
* Penélope Cruz in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
* Viola Davis in “Doubt”
* Taraji P. Henson in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
* Marisa Tomei in “The Wrestler”
(All of these performances were fabulous. All of them deserve the award, but I gotta root for my fave movie here.)

BEST DIRECTOR

* “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, David Fincher
* “Frost/Nixon”, Ron Howard
* “Milk”, Gus Van Sant <--- mega close second
* “The Reader”, Stephen Daldry
* “Slumdog Millionaire”, Danny Boyle

This Sunday I'm having folks over and we're dressing up Oscar-style to watch the awards. Many photos to come, and a video-reaction to the Best Actor category, which will either consist of me yelling, swearing, and throwing things at the television, OR (hopefully) tears of joy!
